With a fascinating history that dates back to the 11th century, Gunung Kawi Temple in Tampaksiring, Gianyar is an ancient funerary complex on the banks of a small flowing river. It features a collection of 10 towering shrines housed within sheltered niches that have been carved into a cliff face. The funeral monuments are believed to be dedicated to the mighty King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens.
Often referred to as the “valley of the kings”, the site is accessed via a steep set of stairs. It was once the inner sanctum of priestly guardians who would go into trance and pass on advice from to the living from the long-dead and defied king.
